CCTV Cameras are cameras whose main purpose is security or surveillance. CCTV stands for "Closed Circuit Television". A CCTV system is comprised of CCTV Cameras, a video recorder, and a TV monitor. In the past, video recorders used to be in tape format on cassettes, but have long since been replaced by DVRs, or "Digital Video Recorders". There are two types of DVRs: PC-based or non-PC based, which is commonly referred to as "Embedded" or "Standalone". Both types of DVRs are based on the same principal technology: each camera is treated as a separate video input, and the CCTV DVR records the footage from these cameras to a hard drive.

A typical CCTV DVR has 4, 8, or 16 video channels, along with audio inputs to record sound. There are several characteristics of a DVR, but the most important are FPS or "frames per second", and resolution. There are two numbers for FPS: live and recording. Some DVRs offer real-time video when in live view, but perhaps non-real time when recording. Video is defined as "real-time" when it is 30 FPS. This means that when the video is paused, a user could forward through 30 frames or snapshots in one second. There is usually a trade-off between FPS and resolution. Real-time video is usually coupled with lower resolution. When increasing resolution, the FPS usually decreases by half. DVRs that have the ability to record in real-time at higher resolutions typically don't have as many features, and are usually limited to 16 channels.

There are a number of other factors to consider before purchasing Security Cameras or a DVR system. While CCTV Deals are not uncommon at the big-box stores or at wholesale membership warehouses, one must carefully address certain factors: indoor or outdoor use, type of mount (wall or ceiling), lighting condition for day and night, camera resolution, and future ability for expansion are just a few. It is best to consult a security professional to discuss the objective(s) of a CCTV Surveillance System, and it is more practical to be able to choose a camera for a system instead of limiting one's self to a specific type of camera that is bundled in a DVR Package.
